Hullo, I am really confused! Moved to L.A. canton, (Torrance). The California DMV website doesn't make it articulate if you lot are a newcomer from some other state trying to register a LEASED auto under a yr old. We are from Georgia...have Georiga licenses and Georgia registration. Problem is...my car was leased eight months agone in Georgia brand new. We didn't take an intent on moving to California... but my husband got a job offering and and then nosotros fabricated the move.

Trying to empathize this Use taxation result. My machine is a leased C Class Mercedes Benz and the sales tax charge per unit in Georgia is 4%. In Georgia, our income stretched way more than hither in California. Wondering if nosotros made the right decision. Nosotros paid some tax equally it shows on our contract. Question is, will I have to pay sales tax on this car if I go register it in California now? I am trying to become a figure on the costs...it took us virtually of our savings to come to California from Georgia, and with the other moving costs, it has been a very expensive relocation. I don't want to be in violation of the law, just if it is thousands...we simply don't have it right now! It is costing united states of america enough to keep upward our payments and rent until nosotros can get established.

Please if anyone has any suggestions, it would be so appreciated! I tried to telephone call the DMV but after waiting for 20 mins, I got hung upwardly on. Where can I discover out for sure?

Cheers
Robin

Briefly:

In ca, you are taxed on the monthly lease payment. This is the "base payment" line on your lease contract.

If your payment in GA is 400+tax (iv%), your total check every calendar month is for $416.

In CA, if your base payment is 400+taxation(9.75, depending on where y'all live), your monthly payment is at present going to exist $439.

Yous will Non have to pay a lump sum of taxation to CA.

Your best bet is to brand a DMV appointment online, and then get to the DMV in person, on your appt solar day, to figure this out. I've never had any luck having the CA DMV pick up the line and give me a correct respond. Or, if you tin exit of your lease in any manner, that might be the best situation. CA has very strict vehicle emissions laws, plus they accuse you a percentage of the car'due south total cost for registration. It can be very expensive.

For time to come reference, if you lot are a AAA member (at least in SoCal), you tin can take all your paperwork from your prior state registration, and bring them to your local AAA function. They will help you make full out all the necessary paperwork and file all the required documents with the state of CA. Best of all, you avoid the lines at the DMV. We did this twice in Orangish County. No hiccups. A proficient idea to call them offset to make sure you lot bring with you all the necessary documents. You still need to go to the DMV to go your CA driver'south license, though. Only, make an appointment through their online reservation system.

Hi Neena...here'south what I put on my course:

The car was leased in NC
Sales/apply tax on my charter is based on depreciated amount during the term of charter and spread over all payments for the duration of the lease
My monthly payments include sales/use taxation...I accept informed my lease co of my move to California and they have adjusted my monthly payments to reverberate California college tax rate

The fact that I exercise not own the machine and pay California taxation in my monthly payments was the key...promise this helps!!
